The Blame Game

“Don’t blame Trump, blame his enablers”… I hate headlines like this. There are a lot of them going round, and they hugely underestimate my capacity for anger and blame. There is PLENTY of it to go around.

I DO blame Trump. Not blaming him is letting him off the hook. He’s the bloody (pun intended) POTUS. The most powerful man in the world. If he can shoulder that office he can shoulder the blame. He’s an old, white fascist and I’m fucking sick of old white fascists not being held to account. Whether it’s people in power or your granny who is “just from a different time”. She’s not from a different time, she’s just using that as an excuse. And so, frankly, are you. Call her out.

Do I blame the Ted Cruzs and Mitch McConnells? Or his “enablers” as they’re referred to. Yep. Every one of them. You bet I do. Whether they supported him for financial gain, retention of power, or because they’re fucking evil Nazis who wish Hitler had emerged from his bunker victorious rather than dead – the result is the same, the result was always going to be the same, and I swear that if anyone tells me it’s fine for me to say this in hindsight, I will trawl through every last text message, Facebook post, tweet and email I’ve send over the last five years to point out that I’ve said it from the start. Not because I’m some sort of great intellect or political thinker… not because I’m a historian, or a soothsayer, but because the signs that this was never going to be a good idea were as glaring as if you turned up to a dinner date and were offered a seat inside the oven after you’d bathed in olive oil.

Do I blame every last individual, rich or poor, black or white, gay or straight that voted for him. In 2016 or in 2020? Yep.

Do I blame a society so entrenched in white supremacy that there will be people who either cannot, or will not, see the difference in the way those fucking terrorists were treated by the police last night to the way BLM protestors were treated in the summer of 2020? Damn right I do. If the majority of that crowd had been black there is absolutely no question that bullets would have been spraying, tear gas released, knees jammed in every second neck, batons flying and tens or hundreds more injuries… instead there is footage of the police opening gates for them, taking selfies with them and helping them down the stairs…. those thugs were leaving the Capitol like they were leaving a fucking pub at kicking out time…

Do I blame the media, for allowing his lies to spread uncorrected? Of course. Both for that and for their use of language. Terrorist/ Patriot/ Thug/ Protestor/ Lone fucking wolf….. start reporting things factually, you bunch of buffoons. A terrorist is not determined by their faith or by the colour of their skin, they are determined by their actions. When you use inflammatory terminology often enough with regards to certain groups of people you steadily build up fear of those people in the population. If you constantly let people off the hook because they look like you, or serve your rhetoric, they get labelled at first glance “the good guys”. So yes, I do blame the bloody media.

Social media… don’t even get me started…

So, yes… each and every enabler, whether they were the coach at ringside whispering tactics in his ear, the crowd in the audience cheering him on, the commentator trying to engage his supporters, the people watching at home and clapping his victory, or the people who glanced at the result and decided not to engage because it’s boring and didn’t interest them… every single one of those people is an enabler and I blame them all.

But most of all, I blame Trump. Don’t shrug off his responsibility, like you would shrug off the responsibility of a toddler in a soft play area, shitting in the ball pit and punching the other kids, while their carer sits in the furthest corner of the room, scrolling through Instagram and getting pissed on rosé.

Trump is not an unsupervised toddler shitting in the ball pit, he’s a Nazi. That is HIS choice. And I blame HIM for that.
